Statement on Political Party Affiliation

I am a Democrat. Having grown up in a more rural area of North Carolina and living in a very conservative family, I used to be a Republican. However, after moving to Raleigh in 2007 I was exposed to many new ideas and perspectives and began identifying as a part of the LGBTQ community. This led to me having much more liberal views on social issues and I became an unaffiliated voter that voted split ticket. After the Presidential election of 2016, I felt that the Republican party had strayed too far from my beliefs and I changed my registration to Democrat.
